The meaning and referent (i.e. instance) of "al-qurbā" in the verse " Say,"I do not ask you any reward for it except love of [my] relatives" (Q 42:23) has long been disputed between Shi'a and Sunni exegetes. While Sunni commentaries present multiple interpretations of "al-qurbā", Shi'a exegetes unanimously maintain a single meaning and referent. Both approaches primarily rely on interpretive traditions (riwāyāt tafsīriyya) as their foundational evidence. This research employs a comparative-analytical methodology through library sources to determine the most precise meaning and referent of "al-qurbā" in both Shi'a and Sunni exegeses up to the end of the 4th Hijri century. Sunni exegetes have proposed various interpretations, including: 1) the Prophet's Qurayshi relatives; 2) the Ahl al-Bayt (AS); 3) righteous deeds that bring one closer to Allah; and 4) general kinship ties. In contrast, Shi'a exegeses clearly interpret "al-qurbā" as referring exclusively to the Ahl al-Bayt (AS). The study reveals that Sunni reports suggesting alternative meanings either originate from the personal juristic reasoning (ijtihād) of Companions (Ṣaḥāba) and Followers (Tābiʿūn), or in some cases, show indications of fabrication (wadʿ) or distortion (taḥrīf).
