One of the fundamental issues in Qur'anic exegesis is the question of interpretive sources, which has been a subject of ongoing debate throughout history. Among these sources, "consensus" (Ijmā‘) is one that exegetes have relied upon to prove or reject exegetical viewpoints. Ijmā‘ refers to unanimous agreement on an issue and can pertain to an entire community, a specific sect, or a group of specialists—each carrying varying degrees of authority depending on different considerations, and thus serving as a valid reference. Faḍl ibn Ḥasan al-Ṭabrisī, a sixth-century Hijri Twelver Shi’a scholar and the renowned author of the exegesis Majma‘ al-Bayān, extensively employed Ijmā‘ across various domains of Qur'anic sciences and textual interpretation. He utilized consensus to substantiate, affirm, or refute exegetical positions. This study, adopting a descriptive-analytical approach, seeks to examine the applications and functions of Ijmā‘ in Majma‘ al-Bayān and to demonstrate the significance of such a methodology in Qur'anic exegesis. The findings indicate that Ijmā‘ holds considerable credibility in exegetical references, though it can be overruled when compelling evidence contradicts it.
