The common interpretations of Sunnis have considered the reason for the revelation of the opening verses of Surah Abs to be an incident related to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) becoming upset and sullen when confronted with a blind/disabled person, and on this basis, they have considered the opening verses of the Surah to be a divine rebuke to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Shiite commentators and scholars reject this reason for the revelation. Because humiliating someone due to a physical and involuntary condition is not compatible with the merciful personality and generous behavior of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Therefore, some have proposed another course of action to explain the reason for the revelation that does not have the necessary accuracy. This article, while rejecting the common interpretation of Sunni commentators and not considering the interpretation of Shiite commentators to have the necessary accuracy, has criticized both views by providing reasons. The problem can be solved based on semantic grounds and lexical contrasts. Therefore, while examining the usage of the word "blind" and its derivatives in the Quran, it suggests a more harmonious meaning for the verse based on the Quranic linguistic approach.
