Al-Kāfī by al-Kulaynī (d. 329 AH/941 CE) stands as one of the most authoritative ḥadīth compilations in Twelver Shīʿism, compiled using primary works from the companions of the Imams (a.s). However, many of these early sources have been lost over time and are now only accessible through indirect quotations. This study identifies and conducts a typological analysis of the exegetical narrations of Muʿallā ibn Muḥammad al-Baṣrī within al-Kāfī. While reconstructing the profile of Muʿallā's Kitāb al-Tafsīr and his affiliation with the esoteric (bāṭinī) exegetical discourse among the Imams' companions, the research analyzes the content of these narrations and their Quranic connections, classifying them into six distinct categories: Explanation of Quranic concepts and their application to the Imams, exposition of their status and spiritual rank, historical events connected to the Imams, interpretation of jurisprudential verses, clarification of societal responsibilities toward the Imams. Findings demonstrate that these narrations—centered on the wilāya (divine authority) and imāma of the Ahl al-Bayt (a.s)—reflect their scholarly authority and divinely-guided role while emphasizing the Imams' pivotal function in Quranic exegesis.
