The present study, aiming to elucidate the essence and identity of Shi‘i interpretation, examines key characteristics and perspectives related to the Imami exegetical school. Employing descriptive, analytical, and critical methodologies, this research seeks to explore both exemplary models of Shi‘i exegetical approaches and the epistemological and historical foundations of this interpretive tradition.
In light of certain sectarian or non‑realistic readings that have portrayed the Shi‘i exegetical school as deviant or confined to specific ideological tendencies, this study—drawing upon diverse and well‑documented scholarly opinions—endeavors to present a comprehensive and academically grounded depiction of the Shi‘i exegetical identity, to identify its defining features, and to demonstrate the invalidity and inaccuracy of such critiques.
The outcome of this investigation is a clear and reasoned definition of Shi‘i exegesis—one that remains faithful to its historical reality while highlighting its epistemic and interpretive potentials within the broader framework of Islamic sciences. This reality is rooted in the principles of the Ahl al‑Bayt, manifested in their transmitted narrations, and analyzed within the framework of ijtihād‑based hermeneutics.
